Seeking Special Home for A Very Special Cavalier...
Meet Winston, an utterly charming 8-year-old Cavalier, whose cheerful disposition surmounts the obstacles that life has put in his way. Winston is seeking a very special home, with a family who will nurture and cherish him and provide the care that is essential to his continuing good health. In return, he promises to be your charming and loving companion and repay his debts in devotion and gentle kisses.
Winston is super sweet and easily adapts to new routines. He rarely barks, but may whine a bit when trying to get your attention. Winston is crate and dog-door trained. He also loves stuffed toys; his absolute favorite thing in the world is a stuffed lion he found in a basket of toys at his foster home. Winston claimed Lion as his own; he sleeps with Lion and will not leave his crate without Lion; he carries Lion around in his mouth; can you tell that Winston loves Lion? It may well be the only toy Winston has ever had.
Winston was found as a stray and taken to a local shelter. While microchipped, Winston's chip was never registered and so his prior life remains a mystery. W arrived at the shelter with a list of common stray dog maladies: eye, ear and skin infections, teeth in need of attention and a desperate need of a bath. The shelter happily transferred Winston to Cavalier Rescue USA and these issues were promptly addressed and Winston settled into a comfortable new life in his foster home. Within a few weeks, new health concerns arose, were identified, patiently diagnosed and addressed by Winston's medical team comprised of his experienced foster mom and a superb internal veterinary care specialist.
In seeking medical care for Winston we learned he has health issues that must be monitored and managed for the rest of his life. He has chronic dry eye which requires drops in each eye twice a day; while quite mobile, two compressed disks in Winston's back prevent him from climbing stairs or jumping up on the bed or sofa so he now uses a ramp to get on and off the sofa. Keeping Winston on the lean side has been helpful in keeping him mobile and comfy.
Winston also has Inflammatory Bowel Disease and stones in his liver and gallbladder. It’s important he eats a special diet that’s low in fat and easily digestible. Winston has a collapsed lung lobe and takes a bronchial dilator (this a pill) which helps him breathe easier. For additional information on these conditions, please reference the links at the bottom of this posting. While we consider Winston to be a special needs Cavalier, he truly doesn't know this, and he acts like a happy go lucky, normal Cavalier!
To help support Winston and other special needs Cavaliers on their journey to their new home, we created ShareCare, a program which shares in the cost of the dogs' current medications for one year, as well an exam at the end of the adoption year. To learn more about ShareCare, click here: ShareCare.
