Heeeerrrrreeeesss Johnnie - a lovable 5 year old extraordinaire. Johnnie loves people and would love to be in a home with another dog, a fenced in yard and an experienced owner who is home most of the day. He loves company and being near his family, but is not a typical Cavalier in that he’s not really a lap dog. He wants to be near you, not necessarily all over you.
Johnnie spent a lot of time alone while he was growing up. His owner, a single mom, worked a full day and didn’t have much time for him when she got home. She hadn’t noticed when he developed symptoms of diabetes. After his illness became apparent, the owner left him at a vet’s office with permission to euthanize. Knowing his condition was treatable, the vet’s office thankfully called our rescue group.
His foster mom worked with the vet adjusting his insulin levels and monitoring his condition. His health has stabilized and he now requires insulin injections twice a day. Because his diabetes went so long untreated, he needs a couple of different eye medications every day. He will need these treatments for the rest of his life. The good news is that Johnnie is a real trooper and takes it all in stride. His docs say that he is doing great. He is housetrained, but needs to go out frequently. He also loves walks and car rides and is a good eater. Johnnie is also amazingly strong, so you'll need to hold on tight to his leash! He could pull a sled if he had one!
Johnnie is eligible for our Share Care program, which provides reimbursement for half of the cost of his medications for the first year of his adoption.
