Copper in Dillsburg, PA

Copper, also known as Red Dog, came to the rescue after his owner passed away. At 6 years old, Copper is middle aged and pretty mild mannered. He is a perfect mix between a loving companion and fun farm dog. He resembles a teddy bear with his short, curly hair.

Copper’s only known health issue is that he lost his hearing. He also had some teeth removed during a dental cleaning last year. He had very sensitive, itchy skin when he came to his foster home. But with a new diet and added fish oil, he is feeling much better now. At 24 pounds, Copper is a larger Cavalier, so his weight should be maintained with diet and exercise.

Copper loves to lay around with his favorite toys in his mouth or nearby. He prefers small, soft stuffed toys. His most prized toy is a stuffed teddy bear that looks like a baby version of himself. He also enjoys chew treats daily. Copper does have a habit of resource guarding (growling) when he has high value treats, so best to avoid these. This behavior may have been learned at his prior home as he lived with several other dogs.

Because Copper is deaf, he cannot hear when someone is coming and can be startled easily. It would be best if he was not in a home with very small children, but older kids are fine. He gets along with other dogs and watches them for cues. But a companion dog isn’t necessary. Copper loves people and always keeps tabs on “mom”. He would prefer to spend all of his time with his special people.

Copper walks well on a leash. He is housebroken and only had sparse accidents when adjusting to his foster home. He will go in his crate, but sometimes barks when left alone. He sleeps very soundly and has to be woken up to go outside in the morning.

Copper is looking for a home where he can relax the majority of the day, keep his owner company, and spend some time exploring outdoors.
