Izzy in Parsippany, NJ
Hello! My name is Izzy, but my foster Mom calls me Isadore. I am ten years old, and came into rescue after being retired from breeding. It took me no time at all to figure out how to walk on a leash and use a dog door, and I am reliably housebroken. I am just having a hard time adjusting to people reaching for me. My life before didn’t involve a lot of handling, and I am having some issues with trust. I really like my foster Mom, especially when she is eating, and will come right up to her to beg her for food.
I am a senior citizen, and I really enjoy sleeping in my dog bed when I am not eating. My foster Mom likes to take me for walks. She claims they are good for me. I think they are just good for her and she is forcing me to join her. Periodically, I will limp a little to make her feel bad for making me walk so fast. It works, and now I get extra treats for my joint health.
My foster home has a whole lot of other animals. The cats scare me, and I do my best to avoid direct eye contact with them. There is a bird that I have my eye on, but he is quite menacing. The other dogs are a bit odd, but I like to hang out with them in the yard, especially when foster Mom throws treats out there for us to hunt for. I am getting really good at finding all the treats. My foster brothers are lazy and only eat the ones they can easily find. I stay out and find each and every one, even if it is under snow.
Since coming into rescue, I have been spayed, vaccinated, and had dental surgery that left me with only two teeth. It hasn’t stopped me from eating, but I struggle with harder food, and will swallow it whole if given the opportunity. You will need to ensure all the things I eat are small enough I can swallow them safely.
I spent ten years living a very different life, and I am a bit overwhelmed by attention and affection. I am perfectly happy to be left alone to sleep in my bed. I would, however, love a home with another small dog I can play with when I am up for it. I really need someone patient and kind, who won’t be offended if I ignore them except at meal times, and if I run from them when startled. A quiet home with a securely fenced yard is a must for me.
I am crate-trained and dog-door-trained. I haven’t had an accident in my foster Mom’s house since I learned to use the dog-door. I sleep in my own dog bed overnight. I need time to adjust to new locations, so a pen or a crate should be used to help me adjust initially.
I am starting to come around to enjoying being pet. I let my patient foster Mom pet me sometimes when we are outside. If I am in my bed, she can pet me, too. I also like to snuggle with my foster brother in one of the beds I have claimed as mine.
