Blackie in Hummelstown, PA
Here is Blackie with her new family…
Meet Black Olive “Blackie”- a beautiful 6.5 year old tricolor girl born 4/29/2018. Before coming into rescue, Blackie developed some health issues which became too much for her owner to manage, so she was released to our care.
After prolonged weight loss and gastrointestinal issues, Blackie was diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). This is managed by adding a pancreatic enzyme to her meals about 15-20 minutes before she eats. She will need to be on this medication for life (about $50-$60/month). She is currently eating a low fat fresh food diet and is doing very well. She will need to finish out a course of weekly B-12 injections (which can be given at home). She may need oral B-12 supplements added to her food in the future. She is also on CoQ10 and Omega 3 supplements daily as well as a fermented probiotic.
Blackie is now at a healthy weight around 13 lbs. Her dry coat is gone and she is growing a nice shiny healthy coat. She has put on muscle mass and is more active. She does have a grade 1 murmur, but no treatment is needed at this time. When Blackie first came into rescue she had an incident with low blood glucose but further tests did not show the same problem. This incident occurred before she was put on the digestive enzymes so we suspect that was the cause.
Blackie is currently in a foster home with another Cavalier and they can be can be found hanging out together. We think it would be great if she could find a family with another calm dog for her to have as a companion. She enjoys snuggling close to humans as well, often in your lap or with her head on your shoulder.
While in foster care Blackie has visited a local nursing home as well as some Cavalier events. She is a friendly, calm dog and rides nicely in the car. She rarely barks, although she does get quite excited at mealtime and while waiting for her meals. She would be an excellent candidate for someone looking to do pet therapy.
Blackie walks nicely in a leash and will potty while leashed. However, she can take a long time outside before she is ready to do her business so a securely fenced in yard may be a better fit for her. She is good about pottying outside if taken out regularly.
If you think you will be a good fit for Blackie, please make sure you have an up to date application on file and email Melissa MacMullin (cavalierrescueusapa@gmail.com) to let her know you want to be considered for this precious Cavalier.
