Hannah in Deering, NH
Cavalier Rescue USA is seeking a new manager to oversee Project Hannah. This project focuses on helping a sweet female Cavalier who is recovering from a traumatic life as a breeder dog. Upon entering foster care, Hannah feared everyone and everything, often hiding head-first into corners and cushions, avoiding eye contact, and cowering when approached. We are happy to report that she has made astonishing progress under temporary project management; however, we are now looking for someone interested in a permanent position. Job qualifications include kindness, patience, a sense of humor, and an outdoor space for Hannah to explore. A 4-legged canine assistant to help with training would be most welcome. Compensation includes loyal companionship, affection, joy, and the satisfaction of providing a safe, loving home for an absolutely dear pup.
Hannah is a 7-year-old spayed Blenheim female born 11-03-2017 who came into our care after being surrendered by a breeder. She was unfamiliar with all that makes a proper home: collar, leash, walks, toys, treats, affection, kindness. At first, she skittered from one hiding spot to another, quaking with fear when someone approached. She had no idea how to conduct herself as a house pet. Luckily, with patience and loving kindness, a wonderful, curious dog has emerged. Whoever adopts this sweet gal will be lucky enough to complete her heart-warming transformation.
Hannah is in good physical health. Her weight, heart, and teeth are all in good shape. In foster care, she was spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated. She was very itchy when we first met her; this has improved with a switch in diet and some supplements. Hannah was not housetrained on arrival, but she followed the lead of our dog and quickly learned to go out back. She readily does her business outside, and then often will leisurely stroll to explore the outdoors. Hannah loves to wander around the large backyard: this is where she is most relaxed, confident, and happy. We keep on top of her housetraining by letting her out every 3-4 hours during the day. She recently started on medication to help with nighttime sleep incontinence; this seems to be working well so far.
Upon meeting Hannah, everyone is struck by her gentle, sweet nature. Originally, she was uncertain about newcomers, but now as soon as they sit down, she jumps up beside them to cuddle. She loves to sit next to us on the couch, and revels when we scratch her cottony noggin. She only rarely asks for petting (and then in a manner so sweet to be beyond refusal!) and revels when it comes. She sleeps contentedly all night without fussing. She gets along very well with our dog and is fine with cats and our chickens. Hannah is completely untrained and doesn’t understand how leashes and walks work, so she needs a fenced-in yard and would make a poor exercise companion. She tolerates riding in the car but doesn’t seek it out. She eats her food with gusto, including any medications or supplements we add to it, and enjoys her treats but never begs.
Hannah needs a calm, consistent, loving, secure environment to thrive. She does not require constant attention but always wishes to be nearby. She would thrive with a single person or small family, in a quiet home with regular rituals. The more Hannah knows what to expect, the safer she will feel; and the more she is allowed to learn about things in her own time, the faster progress she will make. She would benefit from the companionship of a mellow, well-adjusted dog to show her the ropes.
Sweet Hannah is on the verge of starting her next life phase, the one filled with quiet time, affection, joy, and freedom from the fear that dominated her early years. What she needs most of all is to feel safe. This calls for a kind, patient person in a calm environment to complete the transformation that has only just started for her! Hannah is a quiet, gentle, loving girl who demands little and will bring much joy to the family lucky enough to be her protector. She will relish her time spent with you and will always be happy to be near. Who is ready to adopt the job title of “Hannah’s Forever Family”?
