Special Needs - Brighton in Houston, TX

Meet our debonair chap, Brighton: his sweet face will melt your heart! Brighton has had a rough start in life, but his heart is filled with love and happiness nevertheless.

At some point in his past, Brighton suffered a fracture to his tail (sacrum) permanently damaging the nerves that control his bladder and bowel. The good news is that Brighton has no mobility issues and he is not in any pain. He runs, jumps and plays just like any other dog. He does require a higher level of care due to incontinence, but we truly believe he deserves a chance to live a normal life.

Brighton is such a joy! He adores his people and wants to be with you all the time. He enjoys being wrapped in a blanket and held your lap. If you rub his belly he will likely go to sleep, but after a little snuggle time he’s ready to go, go, go! Brighton enjoys running outside through the yard and chasing squirrels. He is crazy about his toys and can easily keep himself entertained by throwing them in the air and pawing at them. Brighton is an athletic boy who should not be left outside unattended. He can easily climb a chain link fence or jump over a baby gate. This smart little guy might enjoy an activity like agility or barn hunting. He rides well in the car and is good on leash.

Brighton is friendly with everyone he meets. He is outgoing and fearless. He gets along with most dogs, but he can get a little jealous about his toys and he prefers not to share mom’s attention. He would do well as an only dog or with a submissive companion. He has been sweet with visiting children. He is very well behaved and only barks when other dogs get excited. He would adapt well to living in a condo or townhome.

When we realized that Brighton’s tail was broken, we took him to see a neurologist at Texas A&M. We wanted to see if there was anything CR-USA could do to improve his quality of life. Unfortunately the damaged nerves cannot be repaired, but he has shown improvement with medication. He is currently taking Proin, (an inexpensive medication), that helps the brain communicate with certain muscles surrounding the bladder and thereby reducing urine leakage. They were very interested in Brighton’s condition and said he may be a candidate for surgery in the future.

Does your dog have accidents in the house? It’s pretty much the same situation with Brighton. He wears a male wrap (diaper) when he’s running around the house. His foster mom normally removes it when he’s in his crate. As far as bowel control, he usually needs to eliminate after eating and he has figured out how to do that on his own. He wriggles on his back to stimulate his bowel. Confining him to a room without carpet or using a large crate is very helpful. Good news, he loves his crate!

Below is what you need to know about how to care for Brighton:

  • Change his bedding daily.
  • Change his wet diaper twice a day.
  • Give his medication 3x a day (Cost is approximately $15 a month.)
  • Bathe him weekly and use a dry shampoo as needed. (Sometimes he gets a ½ bath.)
  • A home without carpet is ideal, expect accidents.
  • Use a bag to remove poop from his kennel, or a tissue and flush.
  • He needs to wear a diaper or be wrapped in a blanket for snuggle time.
  • You don’t have to take him outside to potty!

Brighton is neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations. No heart murmur was detected during his exam and he has been treated for heartworms. This sweetie will require bathing and grooming a little more often, but he loves the attention!

Brighton needs a very special adopter, dedicated to caring for him properly.
