Oscar in Nashville, TN

Update 2-17-25: We’ve received several promising applications for this pup so aren’t taking more for now. Thank you!

Oscar is a two-year-old Black and Tan Cavalier who has blossomed in foster care, and is now ready for his forever family! He’s a small, low-energy Cavalier and at his ideal weight of thirteen pounds.

While in foster care, Oscar has been brought up to date on vaccines and has been microchipped. He was also treated for flea dermatitis. It is essential his forever family is diligent in keeping him on a flea preventative, as even a single bite can cause a flare-up. His bald patches have all filled in and his coat is starting to feather beautifully as his coat is growing back in. He enjoys being brushed regularly and doesn’t mind bath day. Oscar has been neutered. He is on a seafood-based diet due to suspected food allergies. Oscar came into rescue displaying some repetitive behaviors including licking and spinning. After consulting with local veterinarians, and after patiently observing him over time, Oscar’s confidence has improved. The behaviors have diminished almost completely and are likely anxiety-related. If Oscar does slip back into a repetitive behavior now, he is easily redirected.

Oscar would thrive with someone who can continue building his confidence. He loves to play with the kids in his foster home. He’s been working on his dance moves his human brothers call “the tippy tappy toes” when he spins with excitement! Oscar would love a family with children over age five, but a family without children is acceptable, too. He would do wonderfully with a family that can continue building his confidence by including him in their daily life. He’d be an excellent officemate or work from home companion. Oscar’s energy is lower than the other Cavaliers in his household, but he’s always interested in hanging out with the humans and loves a snuggle buddy! He’s safe with cats, kids, and other polite low-energy pups.

Oscar can be a little nervous meeting new friends, but with confident redirection he warms right up! Oscar doesn’t care much for long walks, but will walk when leashed with a well-fitting harness. He will let you know when he’d prefer to be carried, and often looks to his humans for cues when out and about. Learning to trust is something he continues to get better at each day. Oscar is currently fearful of people in hats. Oscar reacts to humans in hats with barking and trying to make himself look big and sound tough. This is being addressed with positive redirection and reinforcement. A commitment to continuing patient “positive only training” with Oscar is required.

Oscar has discovered meals can be fun, and loves to forge in his snuffle mat for breakfast and dinner! He’s also worked hard on potty training in foster care. He’s mostly reliable and enjoys verbal praise for his successes. He will mark if a cue is missed, so frequent trips outside are important. Oscar would love a fenced yard, but it is not an absolute requirement if he can be taken out frequently. Oscar is content being left for a few hours during the day, often snoozing in the same spot the entire time he is alone.

Oscar is a sweet and handsome love bug, his kisses and soulful eyes melt every heart he meets! Oscar is in Nashville, Tennessee and would love to find his forever nearby soon!
